All
too often little things distract us. With overloaded schedules and daily
training routines, it’s easy to lose focus of the things that really count.
Oftentimes looking for a better job, breaking a PR or remodeling the apartment
consumes our time and attention. I’m just as guilty! We all want the best
gear, a successful thriving career or a faster bike split. These things are important,
in a way.
Sometimes, though, things happen that bring life into perspective and force us
to realize that PRs and material things mean absolutely nothing. In December,
I experienced several events firsthand: a loved one was admitted to the hospital
with a life-threatening illness, a good friend was in a serious cycling accident
and another close friend moved overseas. Such events make you reflect on life
and reevaluate priorities.
When the people in your life are no longer around or when something happens to
them, you realize how much they mean to you. The people who support you emotionally
and physically and ask for nothing in return. The people who are always there
for you, through the good and the bad. The people who look out for you
and want only the best for you. Family and good friends.
In the everlasting juggle of balancing work, training and social time, one takes
for granted friendships thinking they will be in your life for years to come.
I recall recent birthday parties, weddings, family gatherings and time spent
with my friends. I have nothing to show for it other then the memories in my
heart. These are the things that count.
So I plead with you. Stop right now, get off your computer, and go take a photo
of YOU and all those you hold close to your heart. You might think it's a silly
idea now but someday you will thank me for suggesting such a thing because life
is short and can take sudden turns for the worse.
I promise you, I've already done what I've asked of you. Having taken these photos
this holiday season has strengthened my relationships with those I love and given
me a little something to hold close for many years to come.
In the past few months I made some great new friends. The sport of triathlon
attracts positive, driven individuals and I’m excited to know you, as part
of this growing family of great people.
