Quad Amputee Finishes NYC Triathlon!
by Susie Gallucci

Do you ever feel like you’re not tall enough, skinny enough, fit enough, rich enough, experienced enough, or just plain good enough to try something? Ever want to do something, but don’t know how, so you don’t get started? I have a short story to tell you. I wish I could tell you the entire story, but it would take an entire book, and it may read like a fiction novel. Fortunately, a documentary crew has been chronicling this story for 8 years. In 2008, you will be able to see for yourself the story of a remarkable man appropriately nicknamed "Half A Soulja." (HalfASoulja.com)

About 6 months ago, I was networked into Soulja, a man who wanted to compete in the New York City Triathlon (1-mile swim, 25-mile bike, 6 mile run). He was already fairly athletic, had participated in athletic competitions in his youth, and was ready for a new challenge. The difference between him and other triathlon "newbies" is that he was born with short misshapen arms with one finger on each hand and without hipbones or legs. He has one kidney. From the top of his head to the tip of his – bottom – he stands and sits proud at 2 feet 10 inches. To make ends meet, on each non-rainy day, he travels from what most Americans think of as "the projects" or "the hood" in the Bronx to the corner of 60th and Madison in Manhattan, working as a panhandler.

2007 New York City Triathlon Recap

July 22nd was a busier Sunday morning than usual. Triathletes from near and far bee-lined to the Hudson river at 4:30 in the morning to set up their transition area then head to the starting line of the 7th annual NYC Triathlon. This year, 4,400 triathletes participated in the Nautica NYC Triathlon, twice as many participants as last year. SBR’s Karin Linner, Jenny Fletcher, Sascha Kreideweis, Darian Silk and David Hollely were among the top age group competitors.

It was an action-packed weekend for triathletes, fans, volunteers and SBR staff. SBR Multisports was the official triathlon retail store to sponsor the race. We kicked the week off in style with a fashion show in which Team in Training athletes modeled the latest in triathlon apparel. Then on Friday and Saturday, the NYC Triathlon expo was buzzing with energy as triathletes picked up their race packet and shopped at the "SBR Village " for their last minute race needs. On Sunday morning, it was great to see so many familiar faces preparing to jump in the Hudson River! On the run course, six SBR triathletes escorted the top 3 male and female finishers to the finish line. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our finishing tent to tell us about their race and win a prize from the "Wheel of Chance."

SBR Multisports would like to congratulate the thirty SBR Tri Club members who competed in the NYC Triathlon. Congratulations to the six SBR Tri Club members who competed in Ironman Lake Placid and other regional races over the weekend. Thank you to all the volunteers who worked at the expo and who cheered on family, friends and teammates Sunday morning. And thanks to all our customers, we hope you had a great race and we look forward to seeing you again next year, or sooner!

Tune in and relive the fun of the NYC Triathlon:

CAREERS AT SBR

Here is your opportunity to relocate to New York City and work full time in the field you love: swimming, biking and running. If you’re interested in this opportunity to live in NYC and be involved in the triathlon / multisport community, then read further. We are currently seeking a full time sales associate to work in our retail store, located in the center of Manhattan, NYC, next to Central Park. Compensation for moving expenses may be available.

The position we are looking to fill is a full time sales associate position. However, we are not looking for just a sales associate. In an entrepreneurial, fast-paced and thriving environment like ours, employees are given a lot of responsibility and can expand their job description as it best suits their talent and interest. This is an opportunity to enhance your career by becoming a team leader, implementing your creative ideas, having a direct impact on the company's bottom line and excelling in client relations. Innovation and differentiation drive our business: we were the first store in NYC catering to triathletes and multisport athletes. The passion and enthusiasm we have for triathlon shows in our relentless pursuit of the best, from superior service we provide our customers, to our commitment to give back to our sport, to our concern for the environment.

SBR Multisports is an industry leader and we are a competitive bunch, but not with each other. Our staff is a close-knit group who mutually enjoys and respects each other. As a team, we are dedicated to the promotion of the sport and the latest innovations. We are looking for someone who will fit in with our demanding but fun work environment. Many of us ride and run together and we even took a company-sponsored trip to Universal Studios, Florida to celebrate the yearlong successes.

Job Description:

The sales associate works with customers to identify and sell the products that best fit the customer's needs, while promoting multisports such as cycling, running and swimming. The sales associate also stocks the floor, assists in inventory reports, cleans and performs other duties required to keep the sales floor beautiful and the products readily available.

Job Requirements / Skills:

Customer service experience and/or retail sales experience is required. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, cheerful and positive attitude, works well within a team, works hard, solution-oriented and driven to succeed. Knowledge of triathlon products and services is not required but is a plus. Passion for cycling, running or swimming is preferred. Must be available to work at least one day during the weekend and have a flexible schedule.

If you share our passion and devotion for triathlon and have relevant experience, we encourage you to contact us and join our team. Send your resume and cover letter to info@sbrshop.com. Check out our website at www.sbrshop.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

We Love You, No Really, We Do
