Is there one word that describes the joy you receive from your sport?
Gratifying
How did you become interested in your sport?
I have this list of things to do some day. Two years ago, Ironman didn't have a check by it.
What other hobbies do you enjoy?
My favorite hobby when I'm training is sleeping. My other favorite hobby is getting massages and taking ice baths after long runs. It's a sad, twisted life, but it's all mine. Mine, I say.
What's your favorite meal to eat before and after a big race?
Fettuccini Bolognese before a race. After a big race I'll have a Good Humor toasted almond bar. And some Amino Vital, of course.
Do you have a favorite song, favorite music group, or is there music you like to train to, or is there a certain song that plays in your head when you race or ride?
Most of the songs on the Vision Quest soundtrack. But no ipod should be without an mp3 or four of Journey and Def Leppard. (Geez, I hope nobody reads this.)
Do you have a personal motto?
Never quit. Ever.
The most memorable and meaningful race you've been in and why?
I would say Ironman Florida last year. It was the first time my family had a chance to see what Ironman is all about. Now they understand why I put so much time and energy into training. Previously, various Maiolo's attempted to talk me into curbing my training. I believe in the medical community this is called an "intervention." It was also my chance at redemption after struggling 7 weeks earlier in the heat of IM Wisconsin. My skin's still a little salty after that race.
Career Highs
Getting out of the water after the swim in the NYC tri last year and seeing Stefan next to me. (Briefly.) Doing a training run getting ready for IM Wisconsin and beating my half marathon PR. Staying with Stefan and Cliff longer and longer on cycling trips to Bear Mountain. For me, there are certainly highs during races, but the truly memorable moments are those little things that happen in between races. Those are the moments that will stay with me.
What's more, it's the cyclists and swimmers and runners that you meet along the way. That's what makes this whole endeavor worthwhile. Christophe and Co. have put a ton of energy into creating the team. And we will probably never cross the finish line as a team, but the guy in the 11 1/2 Supernovas that I see in the mirror every morning would never have attempted half the races on my resume if not for my fellow bumble bees.
